Hey! We are Will and Annie
We’re the explorers behind Off Grid Gluten Free. We’re two celiac’s who love to travel and live a bit more adventurously. Annie also has a dairy allergy, which, as you can imagine, means navigating food is twice as tricky (and twice as stressful) for us!
We decided to create this blog because when we’ve travelled in the past, we frequently found it genuinely difficult to find resources that properly answer our food related questions. We knew we couldn’t be the only ones struggling.
Our Self-Sufficient Travel Style
As more budget conscious travellers, our preferred travel style is backpacking, camping or cycling, usually sleeping in a tent and cooking on our camp stove.
This on-the-go style increases the difficulty of finding the right food and carrying enough to stay fuelled. Over the years, we’ve had to get creativ. We’ve developed camping staple recipes that work in most countries, alongside essential tips for when we don’t know what on earth we’re going to be able to eat in a new place.
This is especially important because we prefer to visit smaller villages and towns. In these places, there is often less awareness of celiac disease compared to the larger cities, making the trip harder. Conveying the seriousness of your dietary needs in a foreign language and explaining why you can’t eat some of the food on offer can be both difficult and stressful.
Making Travel Easier
If you too are afflicted with the curse of celiac disease and you like to travel without worrying about getting sick, then you’re in the right place.
We hope that you find this a useful resource which makes your travelling a bit more pain-free and allows you to focus on the adventure.
